Chota Chetan, released in 1984 under the banner of Navodaya Films, holds the distinction of being the first Indian 3D movie. Directed by Jijo, the film was a groundbreaking cinematic experience for Indian audiences and became a massive box office success, earning approximately ₹60 crore during 1984–85. Its innovative use of 3D technology, combined with engaging storytelling, earned it the prestigious President's Gold Medal. The original cast featured Dalip Tahil, Suresh Mukesh, Sonia Sahni, and Arvind, with music composed by Anu Malik and lyrics penned by renowned writers Javed Akhtar, Anand Bakshi, and Sameer.
In 1998, Chota Chetan was re-released with enhanced digital sound and additional footage, which included a special appearance by Urmila Matondkar. The updated version resonated once again with audiences, collecting another ₹50 crore at the box office. The film’s successful re-release reaffirmed its timeless appeal and pioneering role in introducing 3D cinema to India, cementing its legacy as a landmark in the country’s film history.
