Jaddan Bai, the mother of legendary actress Nargis, holds the distinction of being the first woman music director in the Indian film industry. In 1935, she composed the music for her own film Talash-e-Haq, marking a pioneering moment in Indian cinema. That same year, Saraswati Devi also emerged as a notable music composer, scoring the music for Bombay Talkies' Jawaani Ki Diwani. Jaddan Bai’s entry into film music opened doors for future generations of women in a male-dominated industry.
Originally a struggling artiste in Calcutta, Jaddan Bai began her career as a gramophone singer. Her breakthrough came when iconic singer K.L. Saigal recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a broader path in the performing arts. With his support and her determination, she transitioned from a singer to a successful actress, music director, and film producer, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema’s early years.
