The Amarnath Cave, located in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir, is considered the largest cave in India and holds immense religious significance for Hindus. Measuring approximately 40 yards in width and 75 feet in height, the cave slopes 80 feet deep into the mountain. Revered as a sacred pilgrimage site, it houses a naturally formed ice-stalagmite resembling a Shiva lingam, which mysteriously waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle, symbolizing Lord Shiva’s divine presence.
Situated at an altitude of 3,888 meters, the Amarnath Cave lies about 45 km from Pahalgam and is accessible via a historic pilgrimage route. The journey, traditionally undertaken over four days, includes night halts at Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni. The annual Amarnath Yatra draws thousands of devotees from across the country, offering not just a spiritual experience but also a breathtaking trek through the majestic Himalayan terrain.
