India’s first folk music album

India’s first folk music album

Ila Arun’s groundbreaking album Banjaran, released in 1983, holds the distinction of being India’s first folk music album. Featuring powerful renditions of nomadic ballads from Gujarat and Rajasthan, the album brought regional folk traditions into the national spotlight. Known for her earthy, husky voice and commanding stage presence, Ila Arun played a key role in popularizing Indian folk music across diverse audiences. Her subsequent albums such as Best of Ila, Choli Ke Peeche Vol 2, Haule Haule, Main Ho Gayi Sawaa Lakh Ki, and Vote For Ghagra further cemented her status as a leading folk-pop artist.

In addition to her music career, Ila Arun has left a significant mark in Indian cinema as both a singer and actress. She gained widespread fame with the hit song "Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai" from the film Khalnayak, which won her the Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award in 1993. Other memorable songs include "Moranee Bagaa Mein Bole Aadhi Raat Maa" from Lamhe. Ila Arun continues to be celebrated for her unique fusion of traditional folk with contemporary rhythms, keeping the soul of Indian folk music alive for new generations.
