First musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna

M.S. Subbulakshmi, the legendary Carnatic vocalist, was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, which she received in 1998. She was also the first musician to be conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 1954, the Padma Vibhushan in 1975, and the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1974. These accolades recognized not just her unmatched musical talent but also her role in promoting Indian classical music on the global stage and using her art for humanitarian causes.

Fondly known as the Nightingale of India, M.S. Subbulakshmi was born on September 16, 1916, in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She began her formal training in Carnatic music under the renowned Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and later learned Hindustani classical music from Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas, displaying mastery in both styles. Revered for her soulful renderings of Bhajans and devotional songs, she became a cultural icon of India. In her youth, she also acted in a few Tamil films, further showcasing her versatility. M.S. Subbulakshmi remains an enduring symbol of musical devotion, spiritual depth, and national pride.
