First Indian to compose a full-length Western classical symphony

Ilaiyaraaja holds the distinction of being the first Indian to compose a full-length Western classical symphony. Completed in July 1993, the hour-long composition was created in just one month and was performed by the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London under the baton of John Scott. This historic performance marked Ilaiyaraaja as the first Asian whose symphony was presented by the orchestra, which is patronized by Queen Elizabeth II and led by renowned violinist Lord Yehudi Menuhin as its president. This achievement not only showcased his genius in blending Indian musical sensibilities with Western classical traditions but also brought global recognition to Indian composers in the symphonic realm.

In addition to his groundbreaking symphonic work, Ilaiyaraaja is a legendary figure in Indian cinema, celebrated for his immense contributions as a composer, singer, and lyricist. With a career spanning decades, he has composed over 4,000 songs and scored background music for more than 800 films across various Indian languages. His music, known for its deep emotional resonance and innovative use of Indian and Western elements, has earned him three National Film Awards for Best Music Direction. Ilaiyaraaja’s legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians and remains a cornerstone of India’s rich musical heritage.
