The first Indian music director to win two Academy Awards

A.R. Rahman made history in 2009 by becoming the first Indian music director to win two Academy Awards for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. He won the Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Jai Ho), propelling Indian film music onto the global stage. Hailed by Time magazine as “the world’s most prominent and prolific film composer,” Rahman is known for his innovative fusion of Indian classical music with electronic sounds, world music, and orchestral arrangements. Over the years, he has received numerous prestigious accolades, including two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, fourteen Filmfare Awards, and thirteen Filmfare Awards South.

Rahman's diverse and genre-defying compositions have earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” His ability to blend tradition with technology has made him a transformative force in global music. In 2009, Time recognized him among the World’s Most Influential People, acknowledging his contribution not only to Indian cinema but also to world music. Further affirming his global appeal, the UK-based Songlines magazine named him one of "Tomorrow’s World Music Icons" in August 2016. A.R. Rahman continues to inspire audiences and musicians across the world with his soul-stirring melodies and groundbreaking musical vision.
