The first woman to become the governor of a state in India.

The first woman to become the governor of a state in India.

Sarojini Naidu was the first woman to become the Governor of a state in independent India. She was appointed as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh in 1947 and served in this role until her death in office on March 2, 1949. Her appointment to such a high constitutional office marked a significant milestone in Indian political history, showcasing the country's early commitment to women's leadership in public service. Sarojini Naidu brought grace, intellect, and a deep sense of nationalism to her role as Governor during the formative years of India’s democracy.

Born on February 13, 1879, Sarojini Naidu earned the epithet “Bharatiya Kokila” or “The Nightingale of India” for her lyrical poetry and eloquent oratory. A child prodigy, she gained national attention after entering Madras University at the age of twelve. Deeply affected by the partition of Bengal in 1905, she joined the Indian freedom struggle and became a prominent voice for civil rights, women's empowerment, and social justice. In 1925, she became the first Indian woman to be elected President of the Indian National Congress. Beyond her political contributions, she was also a celebrated poet, weaving themes of patriotism, love, and Indian culture into her works. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians, especially women in public life.
