Tihar Jail Complex in New Delhi is the largest prison complex in India, consisting of nine prisons within the Tihar premises and one District Jail at Rohini. The entire complex has a sanctioned capacity of 4,800 prisoners, while the Rohini District Jail accommodates an additional 1,050 inmates. Originally located near Delhi Gate, the jail was shifted to its current location in Tihar Village, in the western part of New Delhi, in 1958.
Initially, only one Central Jail was operational, with a lodging capacity of 1,267 prisoners. Until 1966, the administrative control of the jail was under the Government of Punjab. However, in 1966, control of Tihar Jail was transferred to the Delhi Administration, marking a new phase in its management and development as a major correctional institution in the capital.
