Bachendri Pal, born in 1954 in Nakuri village, Garhwal, made history as the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest on 23rd May 1984. She was part of the Everest '84 expedition, which included six Indian women and eleven men. Out of the entire team, she was the only woman to reach the summit. Her achievement marked a milestone in Indian mountaineering history.
Her mountaineering journey began at age 12 when she climbed a 13,123 ft peak during a school picnic. After completing her education, she trained at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, where she summited Gangotri and Rudugaira in 1982. In 1985, she led an all-women Indo-Nepalese Everest Expedition. The mission set seven world records and became a landmark for women in adventure sports in India.
