Indira Sagar Dam, located on the Narmada River near Narmada Nagar in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, holds the largest reservoir in India with a submergence area of 913 sq. km. The dam is designed to be 92 meters high and 653 meters long, with a curved alignment of 880 meters in radius. It is a key component of the Narmada Valley Development Project. The structure plays a crucial role in power generation, irrigation, and water storage.
The dam boasts a gross storage capacity of 12.22 billion cubic meters and a live storage of 9.75 billion cubic meters. With an installed capacity of 1,000 MW, it supports annual irrigation of 2.65 lakh hectares over a cultivable command area of 1.23 lakh hectares. The total drainage area at the dam site is 61,642 sq. km. Indira Sagar stands as a significant achievement in India's water resource and energy infrastructure.
