This certificate is proudly awarded to Kottayam District Kerala in honor of its historic distinction as the first district in India to achieve the remarkable status of being tobacco free officially declared on 27 September 2008 the success of this achievement was the result of a year long campaign spearheaded by the district administration district medical office and Kerala Voluntary Health Service with the wholehearted participation of educational institutions hospitals cultural groups religious organizations political leaders corporate groups media and the larger civil society the movement was driven by the awareness of the grave health risks of tobacco use especially oral cancer and the dangers of second hand smoke while the extensive media coverage with over six hundred and sixty eight news articles and videos within one year strengthened public support and accelerated the path towards success.
