Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (NRI Day) is celebrated every year on January 9 to honor the immense contributions of the Indian diaspora around the world. This day marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915, a defining moment that eventually led to India’s freedom struggle.
The concept was first proposed by L.K. Advani, then the Deputy Prime Minister of India, and was officially established in 2003 by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The inaugural celebration was held in New Delhi, and since then, the event has evolved into a vibrant platform for connecting overseas Indians with their motherland, celebrating their achievements, and exploring avenues of collaboration in nation-building.
