Expanding Every Horizon
Organic Agriculture & High-Value Horticulture

The state also produces about 80% of India’s large cardamom, making it globally significant in that crop. Period: Policy began in early 2000s, achieved by 2016, with ongoing emphasis. Impact: • Enhanced global brand and niche for “organic Sikkim” produce - attracts premium markets. • Provides livelihood to rural & hill farmers via high-value crops (cardamom, flowers) and organic certification. • Encourages sustainable land use, biodiversity protection, and eco-friendly farming systems.

With its mountainous terrain and flowing rivers it is a strategic site for clean/renewable energy projects. Period: Ongoing; infrastructure development in recent years. Impact: • Improves energy security for the state and neighbouring regions; potential for export of power. • Attracts investment in sustainable energy infrastructure (hydro, perhaps small/medium renewables) which aligns with global climate goals. • Supports employment in construction, operation & maintenance in challenging terrain, boosting regional development.

Strategic Location & International Connectivity / Green Investment Destination

Global Footprint: Sikkim shares borders with Nepal, Bhutan and the Tibet region of China, positioning it strategically for cross-border trade and connectivity under India’s “Act East” and Himalayan corridor initiatives. The state has branded itself as “The Green Investment Destination” linking its organic/agri/tourism strengths with global investors. Period: Increasing focus since mid-2010s; growing emphasis in 2020s. Impact: • Enhances trade potential with neighbouring countries and regional integration, opening global value-chain opportunities (organic produce, eco-tourism, niche exports). • Attracts global green/impact investment due to the state’s unique selling propositions (eco-friendly, strategic, small size, high per-capita income). • Infrastructure improvements (roads, rail-links, airports) improve accessibility, reducing cost barriers and enabling global tourism and investment linkages.

I The state is a key producer of large cardamom (≈ 80% of India’s production) which is significant globally. Period: Long-standing agricultural strength; increased export focus in recent years. Impact: • Opens premium global markets for Sikkim’s niche products (flowers, cardamom, maybe “organic Himalayan brand”). • Higher value-addition and export earning potential for local producers and small scale farms. • Builds a brand identity for Sikkim beyond tourism - “Himalayan organic premium produce” - which appeals globally.
