Bhaichung Bhutia – The Football Icon of India
Bhaichung Bhutia, often hailed as the "Sikkimese Sniper," is one of the most celebrated footballers in Indian history. Born on December 15, 1976, in Tinkitam, a small village in South Sikkim, he began playing football at a very young age. His natural talent and passion for the game quickly stood out, earning him a scholarship to the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok, where his skills flourished. He gained national attention after joining East Bengal Club and later represented top Indian clubs like Mohun Bagan and JCT Mills.
Bhutia made his debut for the Indian national team at just 19 years old and soon became its most recognizable face. Known for his sharp shooting and agility, he led India to several major victories, including multiple SAFF Championship titles and the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008. In 1999, he became the first Indian footballer to play professionally in Europe when he signed with Bury FC in England.
