Hima Das

Assam’s Hall Of Fame

Hima Das, popularly known as the "Dhing Express", is a celebrated Indian sprinter from Assam who made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the international level. She was born on January 9, 2000, in Dhing, a small town in Assam’s Nagaon district. Coming from a humble farming family, Hima’s journey from muddy football fields in rural Assam to global athletics arenas is truly inspirational. Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she won the gold medal in the 400 meters at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland — a first for India in a track event at any global athletics competition. That same year, she also won multiple medals at the Asian Games and the Asian Athletics Championships, establishing herself as one of India's top sprinters. Hima is also known for her incredible run of five international gold medals in just 20 days in European meets in 2019. Apart from her sporting achievements, Hima Das is a youth icon and a role model, especially in Northeast India. She was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam in 2021, recognizing her contributions to sports and youth empowerment. Her grit, humility, and dedication continue to inspire millions across the country.
