Jadav Payeng

UNSUNG HEROES

In a world plagued by deforestation and environmental neglect, Jadav Payeng stands as a living testament to what one determined individual can achieve, over four decades, grown into a thriving 1,360-acre forest, now known as the Molai Forest, named after him. Home to elephants, tigers, deer, and countless bird species, the forest is a fully self-sustaining ecosystem all nurtured by Payeng’s hands.

Despite receiving global recognition later in life including India’s Padma Shri in 2015, Payeng continues to live a humble life, tending to his forest daily. He has become a global symbol of grassroots environmentalism, reminding us that real change doesn’t need funding or fame just quiet, consistent action. Jadav Payeng is not just a tree planter; he’s a guardian of nature, and truly, one of Assam’s greatest unsung heroes.
