Jitendra Nath Goswami

Assam’s Hall Of Fame

Jitendra Nath Goswami is one of India’s most distinguished space scientists and a proud son of Assam. Born in 1948 in Jorhat, Assam, he made significant contributions to space research and planetary science, both in India and internationally. He is best known for his role as the Chief Scientist of Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar mission, launched by ISRO in 2008. Dr. Goswami studied physics at Cotton College, Guwahati, and later pursued his higher education at Banaras Hindu University and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He earned international acclaim for his work in cosmochemistry and solar system studies, including studies of meteorites and cosmic rays. His leadership in Chandrayaan-1 helped confirm the presence of water molecules on the Moon’s surface, a groundbreaking discovery for global space science. Throughout his career, he served in key positions such as Director of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad and contributed to multiple space missions. For his achievements, he has received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri and accolades from global scientific communities. Dr. Goswami remains an inspiration for young scientists in Assam and across India, symbolizing excellence, curiosity, and commitment to scientific advancement.
