P. A. Sangma

Meghalaya’s Hall Of Fame

P. A. Sangma (1947–2016) was one of the most prominent political leaders from Meghalaya and the Northeast, who rose to national prominence with his dynamic leadership and statesmanship. Beginning his career as a professor, he entered politics with the Indian National Congress and went on to serve in several key roles, including Union Minister of Labour, Information and Broadcasting, and later as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1996–1998), where he earned wide respect for his impartiality and command over parliamentary proceedings. A co-founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and later leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), he worked tirelessly to give the Northeast a stronger voice in Indian politics. In 2012, he also contested the presidential election, becoming the first leader from the region to do so. P. A. Sangma’s career reflected vision, humility, and dedication, making him a towering figure in Meghalaya’s history and a pathbreaker for future generations from the Northeast.
