S. P. Varma

UNSUNG HEROES

S. P. Varma is a renowned social worker and peace activist from Jammu and Kashmir, India. Born on February 25, 1954, in Jammu, he is widely recognized for his efforts in promoting communal harmony and national integration, particularly in conflict-ridden areas of the Kashmir Valley.

Varma has been instrumental in organizing inter-faith meetings, peace marches, and cultural events aimed at rebuilding trust among communities in Jammu and Kashmir. His initiatives have extended to other regions affected by conflict, including Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri, and Poonch. Between 1990 and 2015, he coordinated numerous National Integration Camps, Aman Melas, peace marches, and workshops in collaboration with various agencies. In 2012, the Government of India honored S. P. Varma with the Padma Shri award for his exceptional contribution to the field of social work. In 2017, De Montfort University in England conferred an Honorary Doctorate (D Lit) on him for his peace work in India.
