Smita Tandi

UNSUNG HEROES

Smita Tandi is a police constable from Durg, Chhattisgarh, who has gained national recognition for her innovative use of social media to aid the underprivileged. After joining the police force in January 2011, Tandi experienced a personal tragedy in 2013 when her father, also a constable, passed away due to a lack of financial resources for medical treatment. This loss motivated her to help others facing similar hardships. In 2015, she launched a Facebook page to raise funds for individuals in need of medical assistance. Within just 20 months, her page amassed over 7.2 lakh followers.

Tandi's approach involves personally verifying each case before sharing it on her platform, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness. Her efforts have led to the successful treatment of numerous individuals who otherwise would not have had access to necessary medical care. In recognition of her humanitarian work, she was honored with the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2016.
