Surdas

Uttar Pradesh’s Hall Of Fame

Surdas, the 15th–16th century saint, poet, and musician of the Bhakti movement, was from Uttar Pradesh. He is traditionally believed to have been born in the village of Sihi near Delhi or in Runkta near Agra, both of which fall within present-day Uttar Pradesh.

Surdas, a blind poet and singer, is famed for his devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna, especially his childhood (Bal Leela). His collection of poems, known as the Sursagar, paints vivid, emotional pictures of Krishna’s life and divine play. A key figure of the Bhakti movement, Surdas’s works emphasize love, devotion, and surrender to God.
