Tarun Ram Phukan

Assam’s Hall Of Fame

Tarun Ram Phukan was a prominent freedom fighter, lawyer, and political leader from Assam who played a key role in India’s independence movement during the early 20th century. Born in 1877 in Guwahati, he was known for his exceptional oratory skills, legal acumen, and deep commitment to public service. Phukan was educated at Presidency College in Calcutta and later became a lawyer, but soon devoted himself fully to the cause of national freedom. He was a leading figure in the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and actively participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Tarun Ram Phukan also served as the Chairman of the Reception Committee of the 1926 Congress Session held in Guwahati, which brought national attention to Assam's role in the independence struggle. Apart from his political contributions, he was involved in various social and educational reforms, working to uplift Assamese society through education and civic awareness. Phukan passed away in 1939, but his legacy lives on in Assam’s political and cultural history. He is remembered as one of the early leaders who helped lay the foundation for democratic politics in the region. In Guwahati, a major road and public spaces are named after him in honor of his contributions.
