Teejan Bai

Chhattisgarh’s Hall Of Fame

Teejan Bai (born 1956) is a legendary folk singer from Chhattisgarh, renowned worldwide for her mastery of Pandavani, a traditional narrative singing style that tells stories from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. Coming from a tribal background, Teejan Bai brought this oral art form, which was traditionally passed down within her community, to national and international stages, gaining widespread acclaim for her powerful voice, expressive storytelling, and dramatic performance style. Her style is deeply rooted in the folk traditions of Chhattisgarh, where she uses a tambura (string instrument) and dynamic gestures to bring the characters and stories to life. Teejan Bai has played a crucial role in preserving and popularizing Pandavani, inspiring younger generations to appreciate and continue this unique cultural heritage. She has been honored with numerous awards, including the Padma Shri (1987) and Padma Bhushan (2003), which recognize her outstanding contribution to Indian folk arts.
