Kuvempu (K.V. Puttappa)

Karnataka’s Hall Of Fame

Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu, was one of the most celebrated Kannada poets and writers of the 20th century. Born on December 29, 1904, in Karnataka, he is often hailed as the “Rashtrakavi” (National Poet) of Kannada literature due to his profound impact on the language and culture. Kuvempu’s literary works are renowned for their deep humanism, universalism, and emphasis on social justice. He sought to break the boundaries of caste, religion, and regionalism through his writings. His magnum opus, the epic poem “Sri Ramayana Darshanam”, reinterpreted the Ramayana with a modern and inclusive vision, earning him the prestigious Jnanpith Award—the highest literary honor in India. Apart from being a literary giant, Kuvempu was also an educationist who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and his philosophy of embracing humanity and nature remains a guiding light in Kannada literature and culture.
