Karnataka’s Hall Of Fame

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was one of India’s greatest engineers, statesmen, and visionaries, born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He is widely regarded as the architect of modern infrastructure in India, known especially for his pioneering contributions to irrigation, flood control, and water management. Visvesvaraya’s most famous achievement was the design and construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam in Mysore, which revolutionized irrigation and water supply in the region. He also introduced innovative systems like automatic sluice gates, which were considered ahead of their time. Beyond engineering, he served as the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Mysore State, where he championed industrialization, education, and economic reforms. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the nation, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955, India’s highest civilian honor. His birthday, September 15, is celebrated as Engineer’s Day across India to honor his legacy and inspire future generations of engineers. Sir M. Visvesvaraya remains a towering figure symbolizing innovation, dedication, and public service.
